Intermediate Level Science

Intermediate Level Science is based on a core document that is intended for grades 5-8 in NYS. This course is based on concepts from Life, Physical and Earth Science. There is a performance assessment and written assessment given in eighth grade.

Performance Assessment: Monday, May 24-Thursday, June 3
Written Exam: Monday, June 7
CORE CURRICULUM OUTLINE

 
 
Grade 5 Earth Science

During this year students concentrate on the more basic earth science topics from the ILS core. Topics include the rock cycle, earthquakes and volcanoes, weather and erosion as well as basic astronomy.

Grade 6 Life Science

Students will learn basic concepts in life science including characteristics of living things, plants, human body systems and ecology.

Grade 7 Physical Science

This course involves instruction of basic physical science concepts in science. The seventh grade course will include topics such as atomic structure, periodic table, chemical and physical reactions, solutions and heating and cooling.

Grade 8 Spiral Living Environment, Earth Science and Physical Science

The curriculum in eighth grade is intended to give students an opportunity to master the more difficult concepts in the core from each of the content areas. Students should have time to review for the Intermediate Level written assessment.

Professional Development

Professional development opportunities for science teachers are provided in various areas. Resources provided have been developed in response to requests of various districts and from presentations given to TLQP, NSTA, NABT and STANYS.



Integrated Math and Science Programs

Problem based learning programs which integrate math and science have been developed for Intermediate Level summer school students. Topics include the Mathematical Applications to Human Body Systems and Homeostasis and Forces, Motion and Math.
